Event Description

Sarah Burton is a touring act based out of Texas, originally from Ontario – coming home in November to play some shows in support of a new album coming out this October. She plays Americana music that ranges in influence from classic country to 90s singer-songwriter. She is bringing her show to The Cove on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 from 5-8pm. The new album, Swoonville USA comes out Oct 25 and has just been made available to radio stations here in the US where it’s currently sitting at #5 on the Americana charts.

Hot off the heels of her 2023 garage-rock inspired release, 64 Magic Queens, Sarah Burton is getting ready to close out 2024 with her new album, Swoonville USA. A collection of songs that range from Americana to 90s inspired singer-songwriter, the album is reminiscent of artists like Sheryl Crow, the Rembrandts and The Shins, with a heavy stroke of Margo Price style country and even a little touch of the folky side of the Beatles. Producer/Engineer Jane Aurora (who also performs on the album) has captured a stunning performance from a band that consists of Canadian heavyweights, Erik Nielsen (City and Color, Rich Hope) on bass, Matt Kelly (City and Color, Pink, Chris Stapleton) on guitars and keys, Leon Power (City and Color, Frazey Ford) on drums as well as some stacked guests including Mary Ancheta, Liz Stringer, Kendel Carson, Jody Peck and Cat Hiltz. Recorded at Afterlife and Capsule studios in Vancouver, BC, the friendship and camaraderie amongst the players is the perfect compliment to this group of songs that are largely about finding love and friendship, even in trying times. The album comes out October 25th, but listeners will get to hear the first single, Worth Sticking Around for, as early as September 6th.

Time flies when you’re moving on. Or so it seems for Austin singer-songwriter, Sarah Burton, who has just released her first full-length album since her 2019 release, Give Me What I Want. When the Canadian-expat turned Texan was faced with the losses caused by the pandemic (in her case, months of tours, and the end of her international long-distance relationship), she chose to run for the border at the request of her friends and family in Canada. It was there that she wrote and recorded her new studio album, 64 Magic Queens.

Recorded and produced by power-pop-rocker Dany Laj, the album features the melodic bass lines of fellow Dany Laj and the Looks co-conspirateur, Jeanette Dowling and drums and percussion from Dusty Campbell. Burton’s writing style on this album ranges from early 2000s garage and pop-rock, to 60’s throw-back, and laced with a touch of the bizarre. With influences that range from Rilo Kiley and Weezer, to Harry Nilsson and Chuck Prophet, 64 Magic Queens is an unfiltered trip through a brain that is hopeful even in the darkest hours. Laj’s melodic guitar lines complement the songs with grace, walking the line between glossy and gritty, much like Burton’s vocal stylings.

Since 2016, Sarah Burton has spent most of her time touring across North American in a Dodge Caravan. Originally from Toronto, Burton’s career started with a broken heart, a broken down van, and a haphazard tour across Canada in a van named Lucky. This set the tone for an artist life driven by adventure, spontaneity, and a desire to connect with people from all walks of life. 3 minivans, and hundreds of songs later, Sarah has released 5 albums, toured Canada and the U.S. extensively, playing 150-200 shows a year, and been selected for festivals and conferences across North America, including Red Ants Pants (Montana), MerleFest (North Carolina), CMW, NXNE, CMJ, and more. She has shared the stage with the likes of international heavyweight singer/songwriters Jim Lauderdale, Susan Gibson, Gordie Johnson, and Mary Gauthier. Sarah’s songs have made their way to the big screen, earned college radio charting in the US and Canada and commercial radio play in Canada and Europe.

After 10 years in the Toronto music community, Burton decided to trade the Canadian winters for the hot Texas music scene, inspiring her 2019 release, Give Me What I Want. Give Me What I Want is a raw and real album that skirts Americana, folk, rock and country; the songs tell classic stories in a modern age from love and lust, to enchantment and disenchantment, and that constant search for fulfillment.

The album was recorded in Austin at Public Hi-Fi studio, produced by Elijah Ford (who also plays guitars on the record) and engineered by Brad Bell (Spoon, Arcade Fire, The War On Drugs). Tracks feature Chris Konte on bass, Jason Baczynski on drums and percussion, as well as special guests: Tim Regan on keys/synth, Sam Kossler on pedal steel, Leigh Wallenhaupt on strings, Canadian folk trio Sweet Alibi on backing vocals, and Dave Quanbury on guitar and engineering in Canada.

Ford, Bell, Burton and Konte have since reunited at Public Hifi to record and release 2 follow-up singles: LOGAN (a bar-anthem about a West Texas bartender, released 2020), and I’m on Fire (a trainwreck love-song, released 2021).
