Event Description
Prairie-raised multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Colleen Brown tears at our hearts as she does her own. With versatile songs weaving elements of folk, roots, Americana and pop, and a voice akin to Joni Mitchell, she is relentlessly unafraid to look for beauty in the darker corners of human existence – and her own relationships. Brown’s latest and eighth full-length album, WINGING IT, a consummate, complex “breakup” album, is vulnerable and authentic – full of captivating vocals and unpredictable sonic turns. The album demonstrates why CBC says she is “One of Canada’s premiere songwriters. With a voice like a clarion call she’s one of our premiere singers, too”. Since its release in October of 2022, Winging It has received frequent airplay on CBC and Campus radio in Canada, reaching #1 at CKUA, and has been featured by prominent folk radio DJs across the U.S. Colleen continues to be a beloved live performer, having won over audiences opening for Randy Newman, Jim Cuddy, Rufus Wainwright, Crash Test Dummies, Whitehorse, Frank Black, Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer and Hawksley Workman, among others. Her song ‘I Can’t Wrap My Heart Around It’ was placed in CBC’s Burden Of Truth, the song ‘Motherland’ won a province wide songwriting contest in 2015 in Alberta, and the powerful ballad ‘I Love All Of You’ was a finalist in the Unsigned Only International Songwriting Competition in 2017.
Sarah Hiltz is a singer-songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. Her new album CALM FURY is a collection of songs that grew out of her research into the ways we humans experience, express and suppress anger in modern society, especially women. Hiltz’s craft as a songwriter grew from a desire to bring nuanced expression to complex situations, and her lyrics often live in the tension between two seemingly-opposed truths. Her previous album, Beauty In The Blue, centred around the theme of finding beauty in moments of hardship, so it’s no surprise the artist didn’t hesitate to dive into the subject of anger, in spite of the discomfort it might cause. Hiltz has independently released four full-length albums and two EPs since 2009. Her work over the last decade as a talented singer-songwriter has landed her Folk Music Ontario’s Songs From The Heart Award (Political Category), opening slots for Canadian icons Gordon Lightfoot and Ron Hynes, Top 3 placement in a nation-wide music competition (She’s The One), a Best Folk Album nomination (Toronto Independent Music Awards) and earned her an invitation to give a TEDx talk in 2014.
