The Marriage of Figaro
by Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais
Adapted and directed by Adam Henderson
June 6-29 at Jericho Arts Centre
Flamboyant, flowery, fancy frippery! Sexual fun is at the heart of this comic masterpiece, the source of Mozart’s opera, which continues the jolly tale of the Barber of Seville.
The plot is absurdly complex but does it matter? The Count insists on his right to sleep with his servant Figaro’s bride. But Figaro is a clever common man who uses his wits to overcome the aristocrats who press him down. What matters is that the plot is pure romance. The true lovers must leap over obstacles planted by powerful enemies. Through a wild frou-frou of disguises, hiding in chairs, bouncing on beds, mistaking identities, and inverting gender, Figaro’s wit and sparkling good humour are ultimately triumphant.
The Marriage of Figaro is directed by Adam Henderson, musical direction by Adam Henderson and Chris Robson, set design by John R. Taylor, costumes by Chanel McCartney, lighting design by Randy Poulis, sound design by Scott Zechner, properties by Todd R. Parker, technical direction by Graham Ockley, stage management by Nancy Caldwell, and the co-production managers are Andree Karas and Joan Bryans. It stars Patrick Spencer as Figaro, Mayumi Yoshida as Suzanna, Chris Robson as Count Almaviva, with Sarah Harrison, David C. Jones, Seth Little, Jackie Minns, Anna Theodosakis, Dexter van der Schyff, and Maxim Zuravlev.
