Rollaway has seen a number of changes over the last few years that have landed them finally in the heart of East Vancouver. With roots deep in the red dirt of Georgia from whence its founders Benton Roark and Peden Young hale, fate brought them first to New York City in 2001. It was during a three-year stint here that the band came into its own, playing regularly in the downtown dives and Brooklyn clubs and finally releasing its debut self-titled album in 2003. After beginning their sophomore record The Rollaway B-Sides in New Jersey in 2005, Rollaway made a major move, packing up and heading to Vancouver, B.C. to join in the roots revival thats under way in the city by the sea. The B-Sides, released in Vancouver in 2007, is an EP that seemlessly brings together the various influences of blues, southern rock, jazz, and folk into a style reminiscent of classic outfits like The Allman Brothers and The Band, and more contemporary groups like My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, and Neko Case.

You might hear Angela Latham singing her own soulful pop tunes on a college radio station in Oregon, California, New York or Texas. You might hear her belting out the national anthem at the next Lakers game. Or singing at the Montreal International Jazz festival. Or on the latest LOreal commercial. Thats because Angela Latham has the voice of a star who can color her tone to any mood, expression or stage.

Blue Words is the latest release by bluesman Paul Black, a native of Terrace B.C., now based in Victoria. A late starter on guitar (at age 16), this release is proof he has made up for lost time. Progressing from his first release (as Taxi), this CD features solid singing and playing by Paul and his band. Too often, blues albums lose their freshness after the first few tracks or plays, but that is not the case here. The 12 original songs by Black have great variety, from a classic Stevie Ray Vaughn sound, through hints of Skynyrd, Hendrix and others. Hes got a great blues voice, sounding rough and worn, but easy to listen to on both the burners and the slow tunes too.
