Since 1986, Intrepid Theatre has grown to become the major hub for independent theatre in Victoria, providing
venues, accessibility, advice, resources, mentorship, networking, residencies, new work development programs for emerging artists, and connection to contemporary alternative theatre nationally and internationally. Intrepid Theatre was awarded the 2024 Community Builders Award by the GVA Chamber of Commerce.
Producers of the annual OUTstages Festival (January February), Victoria Fringe (August-September), Incoming Festival: a festival of new work (November), and a year-round presenting series; Intrepid Theatre has been the primary presenter of national and international alternative and interdisciplinary theatre in Victoria, BC for over thirty years, and the city's home-base for touring and emerging contemporary theatre artists.
Intrepid Theatre has produced over 70 theatre festivals in Victoria, since 1987, and has additionally presented dozens of touring productions from around the world. In its series, it has presented work and companies including Neworld Theatre, 2b theatre, L’Orchestre D’Hommes Orchestres, Mike Daisey, The Old Trout Puppet Workshop, Seinendan Co and Bunkaza Co (Japan), Tim Crouch (UK), Circa (Australia), Volcano, The Tiger Lillies, Hoipolloi (UK), MT Space, and La Compagnie Chaliwaté (Belgium).
Intrepid Theatre operates two downtown theatre venues, the Metro Studio (162 seats) and the Intrepid Studio (45 seats). The venues are home to Intrepid’s festivals, presenting activities, development programs launching new local work and emerging artists. The venues are also available for local and touring arts and community groups to rent.
