About

David Murray and the Gwo-ka Masters

Deeply musical and righteously raging…prepare to party with this high - powered dance music! David Murray is almost without peer on either tenor sax or bass clarinet. One of the most forceful and distinctive saxophone stylists of the last three decades, as well as a cofounder of the World Saxophone Quartet Murray is a leader or coleader on nearly 100 albums. Recently relocated to Paris, Murray met a unique group of expatriate musicians and got drawn into the ancient world of Gwo-Ka, an arcane form of groove-based music that was developed on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Heavily dependent on African rhythms, Gwo-Ka uses lots of brass, varied drums, guitar and vocals to evoke a powerful and joyful form of music that is part trance and part celebration. Already with two great records out, Murray & the Gwo-Ka Masters will treat Victorians to a night of acoustic sizzle and amplified scorch: musical magic like nothing we’ve heard before.

“This blend of African, Caribbean and jazz might just be the start of a new musical language.” – Japan Times
