Bebel Gilberto
Entertainment Weekly opines that “her voice is the embodiment of breathy Brazilian cool,” while Billboard declares that she sounds “simply gorgeous.” For Brazilian singer/songwriter Bebel Gilberto it’s in the genes. Her father Joao Gilberto is considered the most revered musician in Brazil and is credited with creating the bossa nova. Her mother, famous vocalist Miucha, has worked with such artists as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina, and Frank Sinatra. Despite the impressive genealogy, Gilberto never had any intention of following in her parent’s footsteps. She moved to New York City and developed her own style working with artists as varied as David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and Thievery Corporation. By the time she released her smash debut CD Tanto Tempo (Six Degrees) in 2000, she had already forged her own musical identity, combining Brazilian pop, European sophistication, and cutting-edge electronica with a sexy, silky vocal style that captivated audiences worldwide. A new release called Momento continues Bebel’s upward momentum as her soulful, seductive, and thoroughly modern take on the magical language of bossa nova proves ever spellbinding.
