ANNA ACEVEDO LYMAN BIO
...this passionate and sophisticated jazz veteran is one of the most versatile singers on the circuit today. (Victoria International Jazzfest)
WHEN YOU WANT EXQUISITE WORLD CLASS VOCALS: Anna (Acevedo) Lyman, B.Mus. Jazz, is a Mexican-American, Latin-Jazz artist, born in Detroit. In her late teens she moved to Canada. Anna's music is heavily influenced by the Motown Soul of her hometown, Detroit Michigan. She has family in Brazil, and is also heavily influenced by the Bossa Nova.
For your special event you could also have Vintage Top 40, ranging from Ray Charles, to Roy Orbison, to Nina Simone, Nat Cole, Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Jorge Ben. Or else straight up Jazz, in which she has a degree. Having grown up in Detroit, you will be treated to some authentic Motown too. You could hear anything but, sorry, no metal.
Anna's music has been heard on CBC's "Hot Air", KJAZZ, and other programs, beginning in 2002 when she released her debut CD "It's Lush". She has been interviewed on CBC “North by Northwest”, and has received positive critical reviews, such as JazzReview.com. Her new CD “Sway-Quien Sera” has also begun receiving radio airplay in the US. It was released at the Pender Harbour Jazzfestin 2008. She has played or recorded with Keith Copeland, Dan Brubeck, Rick Kilburn, Bill Coon, Buff Allen, Daryl Jahnke, Phil Dwyer, Tom Keenlyside, among others, and has appeared, among others, at Victoria’s Jazzfest International, Pender Harbour Jazzfest, Winecountry Ukulele Festival in Napa Valley, EXPO, and more.
ANNA'S SONGWRITING AND STYLE RANGE: Not a fan of boundaries, she writes inter-genre music that is a combination of Swing, Samba, Salsa, and Bossa. While it is harmonically Jazz-based, it is often Latin in Rhythm and attack. Her very first professional gig was at Expo 86 when she started a vocal group which successfully auditioned and performed at that venue.
Anna’s vocal range covers 4 octaves, and is fully Tenor, Alto, and Soprano. In her childhood, she was exposed to the music of such legends as Sergio Mendes, Ramsey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and many more wonderful, Jazz, Latin and Soul musicians. Anna was listening.
She has family and other ties to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. Anna writes original lyrics in both Spanish and English in the same song.
Her song “Lighter” combines elements of Bossa Nova with Salsa treatments, and a laid back Jazz ballad feel. There is an underlying Rock feel in the placement of attack that contrasts with the luxurious Jazz-based scoops and falloffs, and sweet saxophone sounds of Phil Dwyer. “Lighter” was written and recorded during her final year at VIU.
She also does a lot of singing in Brazilian Portuguese and has another band that is completely Hawaiian in style and approach, and that music is also an influence.

“That's right, the Motown Soul senorita is back with her newest release, "Sway-Quien Sera...a zesty, soul searching mix of salsa and jazz blues is a colorful bloom in today's music wasteland. It's a breath of fresh air to say the least.”
— STEPHEN WORTMAN, Rutgers Newark OBSERVER
“...it would be a mistake to assume her repertoire is limited to Brazilian flavoured numbers. She also does a straight ahead version of an early RAY CHARLES hit “Drown in My Own Tears“ and a terrific original called “Get Lost“ which reminds me of those jazzy kiss offs to errant lovers that worldly wise singers like PEGGY LEE and CARMEN McRAE used to dish out back in the day. (I`d like to hear Astrud Gilberto pull that off!) ”
— Rick Dennis, Cowichan Valley News and Views
