Building on the recent momentum of her debut album, Kingston's Liv Whitfield—a.k.a. Luella—has released a one-two punch of pure pop goodness.
Her latest single, Do You, released April 19, comes hot on the heels of her previous single, Gogo. Called an "anthem for the delusional," the song—as with Gogo—is also accompanied by a music video, directed by Whitfield herself, which she describes as an "eccentric thriller."
Listeners familiar with the Kingston artist's debut LP will undoubtedly take notice of Luella's maturing subject matter and songwritng. “My debut album, Luna, was written and recorded when I was freshly 16 during the pandemic," explained Whitfield in a news release. "It was nice to shift away from the melancholic vibe and make something more playful and joyful with 'Do You.'” Since the release of Luna, Luella has performed a series of sold-out shows alongside top Canadian acts indie acts including fanclubwallet, Dizzy, and Claudia Bouvette.
Do You finds Whitfield again collaborating with her producer-father, Zane Whitfield of North of Princess Recording Studio. With the new single, they've crafted the perfect addition to your spring playlist, inviting listeners to roll down the car windows and sing along into a more colourful landscape.
Visually, the accompanying music video for Do You is a Wes Anderson-inspired take on kidnapping and brainwashing; a tongue-in-cheek visual adventure that's bound to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
These recent singles beg the question: Will Luella be releasing a follow-up album to Luna anytime soon? While Whitfield remains mum on that subject, we at Kingston Live are optimistic these close-succession releases are a sign that a sophomore full-length offering is in the works. We can expect to see Luella performing live in the coming season, with shows booked through Ontario and Quebec through June in support of the release, including Elora Riverfest, Wolfe Island Music Festival, and Back to the Farm Beer and Music Festival.
