Event Description
As Canada’s 150th anniversary approaches, the award-winning chamber ensemble, Encore! Women’s Choir is mindfully preparing its spring concert. “Savory, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme” is an evening of music that will represent Canada through themes of peace and harmony as well as music from across the nation. Director Christine Dandy, has created a programme that will guide the audience on a picturesque journey across Canada, honouring its diverse and inclusive culture through choral music.
The tone of the evening will be set by pieces such as “Song for Peace,” arranged by Diane Loomer, where the impetus is to ‘leave every difference behind, united we stand,’ and to ‘love and never ask why.’ This theme will be further explored through several other pieces including “Peace Walk” by Deborah Sumner and Sarah Jaysmith’s arrangement of “Garten Mother’s Lullaby,” each of which convey messages of harmony and peace. Perhaps the most stunning message of the evening however, will come from “Even When He is Silent,” by Kim André Arnesen. The text of this outstanding work was found on the wall of a concentration camp; a message of faith, love and hope in the face of the greatest adversity.
The stunning selection will also take listeners from coast to coast with a gathering of Canadian folk songs and compositions. “J’entends le Moulin,” a traditional folk song, shares the infectious energy of the Quebec folk tradition, “Savory, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” represents British Columbia in Donald Patriquin’s set of Six Songs of Early Canada, “What I want” comes from Vancouver composer Stephen Smith, “Wood River” is a Connie Kaldor song out of Saskatchewan., “Pussywillows, Cat-tails” is representative of the marshes of Ontario and, of course, “We Rise Again” comes out of the Maritimes, with Allister MacGillivray.
A stellar combination of great choral works, gorgeous female voices, superb accompaniment, storytelling and a little bit of flare! Encore! Women’s Choir promises to offer another wonderful show!
