Sonya captivates audiences with her soulful melodies, introspective lyrics, and an unmistakably honest voice.
Born and raised in Renfrew, Ontario, she grew up surrounded by the quiet rhythms of small-town. Sonya’s musical journey began at a young age when she took piano lessons, eventually discovering that traditional music theory didn’t come naturally to her.
Later, Sonya found herself drawn to learning by ear, developing a more intuitive and expressive approach to music. One of her earliest musical influences was Britney Spears, and she remembers sitting on the gymnasium floor in elementary school, wishing she could be part of her school’s Idol competition. At that time, Sonya had not sang (solo) in public, with the exception of being in her elementary school’s choir, where a fellow choir member attempted to get Sonya kicked out of the group because she was not good enough.
That dream of becoming a singer eventually became a reality - actually, it became a “choice” that Sonya suddenly made one day.
In Grade 7, after a few years singing along to Taylor Swift songs and teaching herself guitar on her dad’s old flattop guitar, Sonya spontaneously told her mom, “I’m going to sing in the school talent show.” She did just that, singing “You’re Not Sorry” with a piano karaoke backtrack. Unfortunately, Sonya’s mom’s camera battery died two seconds into the performance and her first solo performance could not be captured.
The following year, entering high school opened the door to countless opportunities to grow as a performer. Sonya sang and played piano at school events, joined the school choir, and coffee houses, was the national anthem singer for the Renfrew Jr. B Timberwolves, and won Valley Heritage Radio’s Search for a Star competition at the end of her high school career.
Her music took her beyond the local stage. Sonya competed nationally, performing her original song “Moment With You” in the talent portion of Miss Teenage Canada and she has also used her music to support numerous local causes and community events, including Sunshine Coach, the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, and local events throughout Renfrew and the Ottawa Valley.
During her post-secondary years, while studying mental health, psychology, and education, Sonya stepped away from music. Eventually, her life’s journey brought her to what she describes as the best city in Canada - her new hometown of Kingston, Ontario - where she is finding her voice, her way back to music and is rediscovering the joy of performing.
What ultimately sets Sonya apart is her ability to marry vulnerability with strength. Her vocal range is both powerful and emotive, capable of transporting listeners into a world of pure, raw feeling. Whether she is whispering an intimate confession or soaring through a climactic chorus, her voice carries an authenticity that resonates on a profoundly human level. Her lyrics explore themes of love, loss, healing, and self-discovery with a rare sincerity, inviting listeners into her inner world while simultaneously reflecting their own. Each song is crafted with intention, shaped by countless hours spent perfecting melodies and honing words until they reveal a truth worth sharing.
Sonya’s commitment to quality, authenticity and honesty in her art are her defining qualities.
