Event Description
One of Ireland’s foremost musicians, Mick McAuley is a multi-instrumentalist best known for
his work with the Irish-American group ‘Solas’ with whom he toured internationally for over 15
years. They recorded 10 albums to widespread critical acclaim and were described by the
Boston Globe as “The best traditional band in the world” and by the Philadelphia Inquirer as
“The standard by which all Celtic ensembles are judged.”
Mick was the sole lyricist of the critically acclaimed project-album “Shamrock City” which
featured guest vocal appearances by grammy-winners Rhiannon Giddens, Aoife O’ Donovan
and by the legendary Scottish singer, Dick Gaughan.
After touring the album in U.S., Europe and Japan, he took a step back from that arduous
touring schedule to pursue new musical adventures and was soon invited by 17-time Grammy
winner, Sting, to join his autobiographical theatre show, The Last Ship, and continues to play
melodeons in that production to the present day.
Mick’s solo traditional album “Highs & Bellows” has been described by Irish Music Magazine
as “a compellingly energetic work which evokes every spectrum of the emotions”.
He is currently an independent music artist who tours solo, and as part of a duo with Irish
Guitar wizard and fellow former Solas member, John Doyle.
Mick McAuley’s music and songs, though firmly rooted in the Irish tradition, also carry echoes
of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Nic Jones that pays tribute to his long and successful career
in Irish folk music. He has performed on many prestigious radio programmes in the U.S.
including Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage and Woodsongs and has appeared on
stage alongside Patti Larkin, Brian Kennedy, Andy Irvine, Finbar Furey, Kevin Burke, Paddy
Keenan and many more.
