El Balcón
Montreal based Latin fusion ensemble, El Balcón, is a collective that composes and arranges as one. They came together with a common love for traditional music from around the world and a desire to explore new possibilities in acoustic sound and groove.

This prolific group began by making creative arrangements of traditional tunes from Mexico, where lead singer Valeria Del Marre comes from. They have evolved to composing strictly original and innovative music that still keeps the acoustic spirit of the traditional music that inspires them. Mexican folk instruments like the Jarana, Reguin to and “La Tarima” (Polyrhythm foot board for traditional rhythmic dancing) blend with microtonal melodies of the east on the violin and oud. All grounded with the earthy touch of an upright bass and an array of masterful percussion including cajon, riqq, pandero, and Kijada del Burro (donkey jaw bone).

Their heavily danceable yet unusual rhythms set the stage for the two singers that never sing a song the same twice. To see El Balcon live is to see a band of best friends. This familial connection comes through on stage where their love of creating and playing together shows in their fiery performances.
