Event Description
On Thursday, May 19th, the Victoria Event Centre will be lit up with touring roots-rock artist Ryland Moranz alongside the dynamic blues prodigy Garret T. Willie (a young 21 years old) and Holler*, a new Victoria-based country band featuring local veteran songwriters and roots musicians.
..............................................................
Based in Lethbridge, AB, Ryland Moranz is a lyrically poetic, gritty roots rocker who has toured internationally. His music is propelled by Ryland’s clawhammer banjo, electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, mandola and harmonica, and intoned in a characterful voice recalling a young Steve Earle.
Ryland’s music echoes the romantic sentiments and tradition of great storytellers, filtering the spirits of literary giants like Kurt Vonnegut and Ernest Hemingway through the compositional templates determined by Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, or Blaze Foley. The reflections of experiences on the road mixed with songs that emerged from inspiration from novels new and old was in part the musings for his latest January 2021 sophomore release, XO, 1945.
Other acts of the night include 21 year old Garret T. Willie who first arrived on the scene at the young age of 10, opening the Alert Bay Music Festival before developing into a Blues guitar prodigy.
Born in Namgis/Kwakwaka’wakw (Alert Bay, BC), Willie has constructed his own sound, blending together Blues, Rock, and Country-Folk that is representative of his environment – rough and tough. Expect silky guitar licks, complimented by rich and deep vocals that sometimes reach the fervour of a heated growl.
Victoria-based band Holler*, explore the craft of classic country music. The band is comprised of veteran songwriters and roots musicians Cluny Macpherson & Dylan Stone, alongside multi-instrumentalist and pedal steel maestro Tyler Lieb and drummer Matt Pease whose resume spans decades of playing with Canada’s finest jazz, country and blues artists.
“Holler* make damn good music that will make you want to jump in a pickup truck and get your heart broken in Bakersfield.”
