Musical genres – and their inspiration – take many forms. Respighi was one of the first composers of the 20th century to seek inspiration from early music: his Ancient Airs and Dances presents brilliant orchestrations of Renaissance dance music originally written for lute. Sibelius whisks us to eastern Finland with his patriotic Karelia Suite.
