This lecture will examine the practices of artists whose works engage the use of monochromatic motifs, and asks whether this singular relationship to colour and form invites critical thinking about the social norms of our everyday world. The discussion will include artists such as Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Joseph Beuys, Yayoi Kusama, Banks Violette and Terrence Koh, and writers like Paul La Farge, Frances Stark and Geoffrey O’Brian.
