Event Description
Fado singer, guitarist and composer without compare, António Zambujo has been pushing the boundaries of the genre and singing to an international audience for the past 10 years. Jon Pareles of the New York Times said of Zambujo: “he upholds fado’s sense of longing and tragic dignity as he brings it into modern close-up”.
His sixth and most recent studio recording, Rua Da Emenda (2014), firmly establishes Zambujo as a standout Portuguese artist with a set of accomplished, poetic and introspective lyrics, sung with a melting tenor voice, delicate and nuanced. His style may be faithful to the traditions of fado - the sense of longing bordering on the tragic - yet he deftly connects the regional music of his upbringing with touches of Brazilian samba.
António Zambujo is part of the new generation of Portuguese musicians. He incorporates elements of bossanova, vocal jazz (most recently, Zambujo has drawn from such diverse influences as Chet Baker, João Gilberto, Tom Waits, and Nina Simone), folk music, and the sounds from his native region of Alentejo in the South of Portugal, to complement his mastery of the fado tradition. Accompanying Zambujo is his own band Ricardo Cruz bass, Bernardo Couto Portuguese guitara, José Miguel Conde clarinet, and João Moreira trumpet.
Zambujo has toured extensively in Europe and South America, including numerous sold out concerts in Paris and Rio de Janeiro, among others and we are excited for his debut performance in Victoria.
