The last night of Garden City Grooves 2014 is a celebration of soul and R&B. Saturday Sept 27th begins at Lucky Bar (7:00-10:30pm) with headliner, Dutch Robinson, a dynamic singer and performer whose music career spans nearly 50 years. His GCG performance will cap the incredible run of great soul singers playing Victoria in 2014, including Sharon Jones, Lee Fields and Charles Bradley. The New Souls kick off the night with a short set.
Dutch Robinson
Over his career, Robinson has worked with artists ranging from Cirque Du Soleil, Curtis Mayfield, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Hawksley Workman, Classified and many others. In 1967, Robinson joined the soul group Ohio Players as lead vocalist and stayed with the band until 1972. In that time he sang, produced and wrote many tracks including “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” covered by David Bowie on Diamond Dogs. His mid 1970s singles as a solo artist are highly coveted amongst Northern Soul fans and collectors alike. In the late 80s, Robinson played Marvin Gaye in the hit musical 'Dream of A Lifetime,' based on The Life and Times of Marvin Gaye in London's West End and in Montreal and Toronto. During his twenty years in Halifax, he won numerous music awards including an East Coast Music Award in 2001.
Robinson currently resides in Vancouver, after moving there in 2012. He recently recorded and produced a new studio album Freedom with some of Vancouver’s finest musicians and producer Aaron Hamblin. Robinson was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame last year (2013) as a member of the Ohio Players. Dutch Robinson will make his Vancouver Island debut at GCG 2014 in Victoria.
