Event Description
Winchester Modern, in collaboration with Allan Collier Designs, presents an exhibition of Canadian abstract paintings and mid-century furniture. The show pays tribute to William Ronald's 1953 exhibition at Simpson's department store in Toronto, which combined abstract paintings with furniture displays to showcase how abstract art would fit into the home. That exhibition featured work by six of the future Painters Eleven, introducing modernity to a public more attuned to traditional art. Critical response "ranged from bewilderment to hostility, but gradually, reviews became more favourable."
Abstract at Home features paintings and paper works by Gagnon, Gaucher, Hutner, Jarvis, Letendre, McEwen, Mead, Meredith, Morris, Riopelle, Tousignant and Town. The artwork is complemented by furnishings from the 50s and 60s by Ebena Lasalle, Peter Cotton, Douglas Ball and Robert Wise.
