Event Description
Victoria artist Sandra Meigs departs from her paintings of monochromatic, beguiling shapes to study the invisible foundations of buildings—basements and crawl spaces. These forgotten and often neglected areas become familiar with Meigs’s new works, which will be displayed at Open Space from Friday, November 1, to Saturday, December 14, 2013.
Meigs’s new series, The Basement Panoramas, are brilliantly coloured drawings with imagery based on the artist’s fascination with the underbelly of domestic architecture. For centuries, architecture has been frequently compared to the human body. Meigs will continue this device, but she will especially focus on emotion and interiority, particularly through the grieving process.
Though her drawings allude to buildings and their infrastructures, Meigs’s canvasses achieve an uncanny human presence that seem to breathe or shift as the viewers observe. In fact, one must walk back and forth to fully apprehend the new works’ significance. To amplify this moving position, The Basement Panoramas includes a series of roving robotic figures in the space.
Join us for the opening of The Basement Panoramas on Friday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Open Space is located at 510 Fort Street, second floor.
