Event Description
“The band artfully synthesizes Indian Bhangra and something akin to New Orleans second-line funk. Plus it’s fun as hell.” – Chicago Reader
It’s hard to imagine there’s going to be a better party than the one thrown by Red Baraat, whose sweaty, beat-heavy live shows are a killer hybrid of brass band music with Bhangra rock. This unique, eight-piece crew from Brooklyn is led by Sunny Jain, who used to be more of a straight-ahead jazz drummer until he discovered the dhol, an East Indian marching drum that is played standing up. Suddenly, Jain found himself heading up dance parties moreso than concerts. Eventually equipped with five horns and three percussionists, Red Baraat became an electrifying mix of world music and vernacular American musical idioms such as hip-hop and James Brown funk. These guys have left a trail of scorch marks from the White House to the Bonnaroo Festival, and now they’re ready to set Victoria on fire. Don’t miss this one! Rohin Khemani percussion, Tomas Fujiwara drums, Arun Luthra soprano saxophone, Mike Bomwell baritone saxophone, Sonny Singh trumpet/vocals, MiWi La Lupa bass trumpet/rap, Smoota trombone and John Altieri sousaphone/rap
