Event Description
Curated by Ken Pickering and Torsten Müller, this three-night collaborative project has eight brilliant Canadian and Swedish musicians exploring improvisational practices in a warm, intimate setting. Each evening the octet pushes the music into daring and invigorating terrain using different combinations of players throughout.
Swedish free improviser Christian Munthe concentrates on the sonic possibilities offered by the acoustic guitar in solo as well as various ensemble settings. He’s released recordings under his own name as well as with Mats Gustafsson (Two Slices of Acoustic Car), Günter Christmann, Anders Dahl, Paul Lovens, Phil Minton, and Roger Turner.
Vancouver drummer Dylan van der Schyff is a heavyweight in the city’s acclaimed jazz and improvised music community. AllAboutJazz.com notes that his “ability to extract an infinite variety of textures from a simple drum kit is unparalleled.” Besides working with local groups like Talking Pictures, NOW Orchestra, and the Brad Turner Quartet, Dylan collaborates with international names like Dave Douglas, Mark Helias, Achim Kauffman, and Fredrik Ljungkvist.
Vancouver-based clarinetist François Houle is a spectacular musician whose performances and recordings transcend stylistic borders. Also a composer and bandleader, Houle explores the many facets of modern music—from electronic manipulation to acoustic contemporary chamber music. He has worked alongside Marilyn Crispell, Dave Douglas, and Evan Parker, and with ensembles under the direction of Mauricio Kagel and Iannis Xenakis.
Swedish saxophone whiz Mats Gustafsson is a mainstay on the Scandinavian free jazz scene. Brandishing an intense, robust sound, he’s worked with bands like The Thing and Barry Guy New Orchestra as well as improvisers such as Misha Mengelberg, Marilyn Crispell, and Otomo Yoshihide. Per-Åke Holmander is arguably the most important tuba player in European new and improvised music. The talented Swede is a member of Barry Guy’s New Orchestra, Peter Brotzmann’s Tentet, Ken Vandermark’s Territory Band, and Fredrik Ljungkvist’s Yun Kan 5.
Swedish percussionist Raymond Strid is an important member of the international improvising community, working with Barry Guy, Sten Sandell, Evan Parker, and Joëlle Léandre. Strid has the ability to clarify the essence of the music as it develops, creating a sense of space with great subtlety within the most complex of settings, and often holds back where another might blur the details.
Renowned German bassist Torsten Müller continues to be a valued collaborator on Vancouver’s creative music scene since making the city his home almost a decade ago. A great improviser who expands the sonic possibilities of his instrument through extended techniques, Müller has worked with a diverse cast of international improvisers including Günter Christmann and Ken Vandermark.
The acclaimed Vancouver cellist Peggy Lee is a consistently inventive improviser with a riveting presence. Her outstanding ensemble, the Peggy Lee Band, performs her finely crafted, sonorous, and beautiful compositions. As an improviser Lee has worked with many of the world’s best players such as Louis Sclavis, Dave Douglas, Wayne Horvitz, and Barry Guy.
