Event Description
The Toronto-based jazz quartet, Time Warp, co-led by Barry Elmes drums, and Al Henderson bass, was formed in 1980 as a vehicle for writing and performing original music. Time Warp became an 'underground' hit, releasing five recordings between 1982 and 1992 (garnering three JUNO nominations). Time Warp forged a unique style and original repertoire, drawing on musical and cultural influences from around the world, long before the term "world music" was widely known. Today, with Kelly Jefferson tenor and soprano sax and Kevin Turcotte trumpet and flugelhorn the band is still firmly rooted in the long tradition of improvised jazz music. Their vast repertoire has grown to include original compositions influenced by the rhythms and harmonic structures of West African music, Japanese Koto music, Hungarian folk songs North American urban funk rhythms, New Orleans parade music, country waltzes and more.
In recent years, more and more people have been taking notice of Time Warp's distinct musical approach and energy. Coast-to-coast concert tours have attracted large and enthusiastic audiences and many of the band's recordings have garnered awards, including their latest CD, Warp IX (Cornerstone), which was the winner of the "Indy Award for the Best Jazz Recording" in 2002.
In conjunction with Time Warp's performance in Victoria, all members of the band will participate in conducting a workshop/clinic at the Esquimalt High Band Annex (Nov.18, 3 - 4:30pm) for area music students, as part of the Victoria Jazz Society's "Student Outreach Program". Registration for this workshop is free - please contact the Victoria Jazz Society office at 388-4423 to register.
