Dave Bookman was—and continues to be—an inspiration to this writer (not that I'm a writer, per se). His passion for music was infectious, and so was his warm, friendly spirit. And it's a spirit kept alive by the many, many people whose lives 'Bookie' touched through his love and support for Canada's independent music scene.
The second annual Dave Bookman tribute concert has just been announced, and although it's taking place in Toronto (as did the inaugural concert), I couldn't help but notice a surprising amount of Kingston content in the concert's lineup, which is set to take place at The Garrison on May 9, 2025. Presented by INDIE88 and Departure, performing acts and artists include Kingston's Miss Emily, Piner, Emilie Steele, and Hugh Christopher Brown. The full lineup is nothing short of impressive.
To boot, the show is being organized once again by Wolfe Island's Stephen Stanley of The Stephen Stanley Band, and the more than 30 acts performing will all be covering songs by Kingston's The Tragically Hip. The name of the concert, "Let's Get Friendship Right," is a lyric from The Hip's song, It's a Good Life If You don't Weaken from their album, In Violet Light.
Most importantly is that it's all being done in memory of Dave Bookman.
"It has been six years since we lost Dave Bookman on May 21, 2019," states the event's media release. "A brilliant radio host, an encyclopaedic music lover, avid sports fan (Go Sens!), moral compass, son, brother and dear friend. Bookie and his giant heart celebrated and connected music to listeners in a unique and powerful capacity. His friends and family continue to remember, honour, and miss him and his presence in their daily lives." The show will be hosted by Josie Dye, a very close friend of Bookie's, who worked with him at both THE EDGE and INDIE88.
Admission to the May 9 concert at The Garrison in Toronto is free with a non-perishable food item for The Daily Bread Food Bank (CMW/Departure passes will be honoured, with a donation).
