Anyone who’s seen or heard James Hunter perform is already hip to his remarkable talents as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. This includes Van Morrison who states that “James is one of the best voices and best kept secrets in British R&B and Soul.” Rolling Stone says that Hunter is “a treat not to miss.” There’s no denying that Hunter’s musical style harkens back to the classic ’50s and early ’60s R&B (Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles) yet the music proves timeless. Often compared to the legendary Sam Cooke, Hunter’s voice is smooth and controlled. Through his infectious vocal and guitar renderings, clever songwriting, and tight horn arrangements, he shows he’s someone who’s assimilated his influences and created his own thing. The Colchester, England, native has toured and performed extensively with Van Morrison, John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, and Georgie Fame. His recent CD, People Gonna Talk (Go/Rounder), was ranked number 8 on the 50 Best Albums of 2006 by Mojo magazine. Asked about the frenzy created during his concerts, Hunter concludes, “It’s simple really — it’s music you can groove to.” With Jay Collins tenor sax, Lee Badau baritone sax, Jason Wilson double bass, Jared Elioseff keyboards, David Mason drums. A smokin’ double bill with Jackie Greene.
