Not So Faint after all

The Broom Factory and Flying V Productions welcomed So Faint to Kingston on Friday October 23 as Hannah Georgas and Lyn Heinemann brought their new musical project to town, fresh off the release of their self-titled debut album.

While So Faint takes a different direction from Georgas’ solo work and her involvement with Broken Social Scene, Heinemann brings her own indie-rock background to the partnership, creating something fresh while remaining true to Georgas’ established songwriting style.

There’s a polished quality to their female-fronted indie rock, balancing a little angst with a softer, more melodic approach. It’s semi-angry, but never abrasive, with an East Coast indie-rock feel that’s easy on the ears without losing its edge.

For local music lovers, there are familiar elements reminiscent of Kingston favourites Forty Seven Teeth and HAG. It’s the kind of music that feels instantly recognizable while still bringing something fresh to the table.

With their debut album barely a week old, So Faint’s stop at The Broom Factory marked an early chapter for the new project, bringing two established musicians together to explore a different side of their creativity.

Opening the night was Montreal-based Ada Lea, bringing her blend of indie rock, dreamy melodies and heartfelt songwriting to the stage. Her performance felt personal and full of emotion, making for a captivating start to the evening.

Throughout her set, Ada Lea switched between bass guitar, keyboard and harmonica, showing off her versatility as a musician. Each instrument brought something different to the performance, keeping things interesting and highlighting her creativity on stage.

From Ada Lea’s intimate opening set to So Faint’s fresh take on indie rock, the evening brought together two distinct musical styles that complemented each other. For Georgas and Heinemann, So Faint brings their individual musical backgrounds together in a way that feels natural, giving Kingston music lovers something new to sink their teeth into.
