Wojtek Justyna brings the world to Westport
Hailing from Poland, guitarist and composer Wojtek Justyna has built an international reputation for turning genres into playgrounds. As the driving force behind Powerhouse TreeOh!, his music blends jazz, funk, rock, Afrobeat, blues and world rhythms into an energetic instrumental experience that feels both adventurous and irresistibly danceable.
A graduate of the prestigious Royal Conservatory in The Hague in Holland, Wojtek has performed across Europe and beyond, collaborating with musicians from a remarkable range of musical traditions. His band thrives on spontaneity, with no two performances ever unfolding quite the same way. Whether he’s delivering fiery guitar solos, intricate grooves or moments of unexpected musical conversation, Wojtek proves that instrumental music can tell vivid stories without saying a single word.
We are looking forward to seeing you give a warm welcome to Wojtek Justyna and Powerhouse TreeOh! at The Cove Inn on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 5-8 pm. Details and reservations here.
Seamus Cowan: Your music travels through jazz, funk, Afrobeat, rock and blues so naturally. If you could invite three musicians from any era to join PowerHouse TreeOh! for one unforgettable jam session, who gets the call, and what song would you hope magically appears?
Wojtek Justyna: Oh that’s an interesting concept! How about Betty Carter singing, MonoNeon on bass and Kenny Garrett on sax. That would be something. I could only imagine what kind of music these musicians could cook up together. Wouldn’t leave much for me to do! Haha… Just sit back and enjoy.
Q: Instrumental music asks listeners to create their own stories. Has anyone ever told you what they imagined while listening to one of your pieces that completely surprised—or amused—you?
Wojtek: I have a tune called “Sleeping Cow” that is one of our flagship tunes with my band back in Europe. I always ask the audience before playing the song: "Have you ever wondered what a cow dreams about?” The tune has many different parts and is a whole musical odyssey and many people after the show come up to me with their own story about the sleeping cow’s adventures. Sometimes it’s red, sometimes it sings, sometimes it’s an astronaut… Crazy stuff!
Q: Touring across different countries must come with some memorable adventures. What’s the funniest, strangest or most unexpected thing that’s happened to the band on the road that audiences would never guess?
Wojtek: Haha, for sure! Most of them will probably remain untold ;-) Once, when we were on tour in India, we had a driver taking us around. The traffic there is INSANE, and we were constantly clinging to our seats and gasping at every turn. Our driver found this extremely amusing—he’d just laugh at us and start driving even crazier!!! We were convinced we were going to crash, hit another car, or run over a pedestrian at any moment… Somehow, we never did, but we were scared out of our minds. Meanwhile, he was having the time of his life! Haha!
Q: Your performances leave lots of room for improvisation. Has there ever been a moment on stage when something went completely off the rails, only to become one of your favourite musical moments?
Wojtek: Oh definitely! Mostly when we try new tunes that we are not sure of, that’s when disaster strikes most often… Of course we need to immediately find solutions without making it apparent that we’ve messed up. It has happened more than a few times that these “solutions” have become staples of the final arrangement.
Q: If someone had never heard PowerHouse TreeOh! before and you had exactly one song to convince them they’re about to have a great time, which track would you choose—and what should they listen for in those first thirty seconds?
Wojtek: That’s easy! Check out Get That Crispy from last year’s Canadian tour. It’s a fun little ditty that showcases what this band is all about: groove-jazz & grit!
