Piner releases new single “Odelia”
Canadian artist Piner announces the release of her new single, “Odelia,” a powerful pop/rock track rooted in folk storytelling that confronts gender inequality, inherited expectations, and the radical act of self-trust. “Odelia” arrives at a moment when conversations around women and 2SLGBTQI+ rights, autonomy, and power feel both urgent and necessary.
“Odelia” was inspired by Piner’s reflections on the rollback of gender equality, particularly in light of recent policies emerging from the United States. Rather than giving power to the person who causes “Odelia” harm, Piner turns inward, crafting a narrative that emphasizes self-worth and empowerment.
“This song doesn’t give power to the person who wronged Odelia,” says Piner. “It’s about putting that energy back into yourself, choosing to believe in your own value, and ultimately allowing yourself to walk away.”
Music as a Mirror: A Reflective Take on Pop/Rock
Musically, “Odelia” blends folk-rooted lyricism with pop and rock sensibilities, “folk at the roots, rock and pop at the branches.” While the song contains moments of rage, hurt, and vengeance, particularly in its bridge, it ultimately prioritizes reflection over fear, offering clarity instead of collapse.
“There’s pain in this song, but it’s not about staying there,” says Piner. “It’s about reflection and strength. About asking yourself what you deserve, and how you can move forward in a way that doesn’t allow you to return to unhealthy relationships or dynamics.”
This reflective approach aligns with the broader themes present throughout Piner’s body of work. Her songwriting consistently engages with political and social issues through empathy, addressing topics such as gender inequality, climate justice, and the lack of affordable housing, centring those who are most vulnerable and least heard.
An All-Female Creative Process
The recording of “Odelia” mirrored its themes of empowerment and self-reclamation, and the track was created entirely with female-identifying producers, engineers, and musicians.
Piner co-produced the single with Annelise Noronha (Prince Edward County, ON), whose steady, supportive presence helped Piner build confidence and trust her artistic instincts throughout the production and mixing process. Morgan Doctor performed drums on the track, while Heather Kirby handled mastering.
Piner herself performed all remaining parts - vocals, guitar, bass, and more - stepping far beyond her usual role in a band.
“Writing and playing the bass part for the first time felt incredibly vulnerable,” Piner shares. “But it reminded me that comparison and self-doubt are the death of art. Doing this pushed me to realize I’m capable of more than I ever thought possible.”
The song also features two guitar lines co-written with Piner’s older brother, whose presence on the track reflects the importance of supportive relationships in any journey toward self-discovery and strength.
“It takes privilege and support to be able to walk away and stand up for yourself. I have that. I hope this song can be a beacon of hope for those who don't and an urging for those who do to take on the challenging journey of choosing themselves.”
An Anthem for Now
“Odelia” is more than a single; it’s a statement. A song about finding clarity when others try to define your path, and about the radical power of choosing yourself.
“This song makes me feel strong, confident, angry, energized, and free,” says Piner. “It makes me feel dangerous, in the best way.”
