Brandy Moore and the Nightcaps debut their Victoria
audience in Oak Bay Thursday (Aug. 9).
Last September, Moore, who was born in the
Okanagan, returned to the West Coast and met Jon
Miller at Hermann’s Jazz Club. While they’ve played
places such as 17 Mile Pub, this is the first downtown
gig.
Originally from the Okanagan Valley, Moore moved to
the west coast at age 17, studied music at Capilano
College, and spent the next 10 years performing around
Greater Vancouver before releasing her first self-titled
independent CD in 1999. In 2001, she relocated to
Regina, Saskatchewan and went on to release an
additional four independent CDs over the next decade.
“I wanted to come back home to B.C. but Vancouver
felt too big and Victoria felt just right,” Moore said. “I
missed the mountains and the ocean.”
She met Miller and slowly they crafted The Nightcaps
with Victor Wells on guitar and vocals, George Koenig
on bass and Peter Rothhauser on keyboard.
“We both had been wanting to put something together
and I came to Victoria with the intention of getting my
singing out there,” she said.
The Thursday evening free concert at Willows Park
features particularly R&B.
“We love this music. I love performing this music. It’s
got so much soul in it, love and passion. That’s why it’s
timeless.
“Lucky for us crowds like it too,” Moore says.
The concert features power soul including one of her
favourites by Etta James, I’d Rather Go Blind, in the
second set.
“It’s one of those that gets you right in the gut, great
song. I’d rather go blind than to see you walking away
from me. It’s one of the ones I think is going to have an
impact on people,” Moore says.
Other classics come courtesy of Stevie Wonder to
Aretha Franklin.
Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture kicks off Arts &
Culture Fortnight with live music by Brandy Moore & the
Nightcaps from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Willows Beach Park.

“What a beautiful setting, I was down there the other
day looking at the space. To play in front of the ocean,
it’s nice,” Moore says.
The singer songwriter and song interpreter, Moore has
appeared in western Canada, the southwestern United
States, New York City, Mexico, Central America, and
Portugal. Her most recent CD Real Good Love –
available at the show – was recorded in Nashville in
2011 with several seasoned session and touring
musicians, including Bonnie Raitt’s long-time guitarist
George Marinelli.
