Good Co. Have been up to some good! With a new album release on the horizon and upcoming shows to celebrate!
We loved hearing a sneak peak so much we just had to have a chat with Cody Allen James to find out more information!
Q: So your upcoming debut self-titled album Good Co. was recorded at The Oscillitarium in Scarborough, how surreal of an experience was that for you? What do you remember the most?
A: I have recorded there before with another band and have become good buds with The Oscillitarium family. It made for very relaxing recording sessions and they’re always up for a good time.
Q: Your alt-country music has a very classic feel, are there any contemporary artists that are currently on the scene that you draw inspiration from?
A: I think honestly we probably take more inspiration from modern bands.. bands like Deer Tick, The Felice Brothers, Chris Acker, The Deslondes the list goes on. Ben Cranston, the bass player and co writer for Good Co., and I are brothers and we grew up on old rock n roll records and roots country so, hard to not have that running through our blood at all times too.
Q: Your second single from the Good Co. album, ‘Paint Fumes’ (
web link) has been out since February 21st - your next single Taking Back the Night is set to release on March 8, how will you be celebrating the third single??
A: That night we will be playing The Cameron House in Toronto as a part of Big Tobacco and The Pickers monthly residency. Very excited to scratch that venue off the ol’ bucket list.
Q: When can listeners expect the full album drop? Can we expect another same day party?? I know it will be toe tapping and having everyone dancing.
A: We will be dropping the album on April 5th and playing The Buckle (downstairs) here in Kingston. Brothers Gently will be opening the night, we’ll play the album in full and then Laura Kelly AKA DJ LK will curate the whole night until late. We didn’t want to do just another typical show, we wanted it to feel more like a celebration. On that day too we will be starting pre orders for vinyl and have new shirts to boot.
Q: You describe the recording of this album as live off the floor with minimal overdubbing to give the most authentic live sound you could muster. When you envision how you want your music to come across, where could you find fans listening to it the most? (The car, a bar?)
A: Yeah, for the most part the album was recorded live off the floor.. just the four of us (Ben, Mike, Dan and I) all in the same room. Like how records were made and how they’re supposed to be made. Tobin Hopwood, our producer, is a true wizard and his knowledge on vintage gear is incredible. All the tracks were run through a tape machine as well just to give it that extra vintage sound.
To answer your other question, I always love a good car listen but I’m hoping once we have vinyl we can be the soundtrack to a party or hang. Nothing beats our live shows though so after you hear the record come on out to a show.
Q: What can newcomers to Good Co. Expect of your album release party April 5 downstairs at the Buckle? Tickets are available now and more info can be found @ (
web link)
A: Doors will be at 7pm, Brothers Gently will hit the stage around 8pm, then we’ll go up and play the album in full all while DJ LK spins records till late. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, or $40 gets you admission and a vinyl pre order.
